Build from the approved route and system requirements
The drawings and specifications should establish conduit quantity, size, material, arrangement, bends, sweeps, risers, stub-ups, transitions, access structures, warning or identification requirements, cover, separation, and any encasement or reinforcement. Electrical one-lines, site plans, utility details, equipment layouts, and manufacturer requirements should be reviewed together. Field routing should not be used to resolve a missing design decision or change a required electrical or utility configuration.
Routing also has to fit the civil site. Finished grades, building foundations, slabs, drainage, wet utilities, landscaping, roadways, retaining elements, future maintenance access, and other underground systems can affect horizontal and vertical alignment. The owner, serving utility, engineer, municipality, roadway authority, and authority having jurisdiction may each control different requirements. The bid should identify the governing documents and the party responsible for design review, permits, inspections, and acceptance.
Coordinate excavation, conduit placement, and backfill as one sequence
Survey control, existing-utility information, locate responses, required exposure of conflicts, trench access, groundwater, soil conditions, bedding, and equipment access shape the installation plan. Conduit banks need stable support and consistent geometry through straight runs, bends, risers, and structure entries. Open ends, stub-ups, and completed sections should be protected from movement, damage, debris, and water while adjacent grading, concrete, and utility work continues.
The approved details determine whether a pathway is direct-buried, grouped with spacers, concrete-encased, or coordinated within a common trench. Owner-furnished or utility-furnished materials and structures should be identified with submittal, delivery, receiving, storage, and damage-responsibility requirements.
Turnover may require visual inspection, conduit proofing or mandrel work, pull lines, caps or plugs, identification, measured offsets, structure records, redline information, as-built survey support, compaction results, restoration acceptance, and correction of damaged or obstructed pathways. The exact method, acceptance criteria, witnesses, and documentation come from the project requirements. Planning those activities before burial gives the electrical contractor, utility, engineer, owner, and general contractor a clearer release point.
Package the conduit bid around measurable scope
Provide the current civil, electrical, utility, structural, and landscape documents; conduit and structure schedules; one-lines and equipment locations; specifications and addenda; survey and existing-utility information; geotechnical data; trench, encasement, reinforcement, and restoration details; permit requirements; phasing; testing criteria; submittal status; and required completion dates. Identify material-supply boundaries, utility work, cable work, inspections, fees, survey, testing, and closeout responsibilities.
